10 minute menswear is born in response to the darkness and lack of daylight hours in January. For me drawing in intertwined with emotion. My mood drives and dictates my drawn marks, speed, pressure and colour.
For me January not is congruent with my style of drawing because in January I struggle to find the mood to draw. The lack of light, the cold and the frost does not motivate, I hibernate. Drawn exploration halts and sprawling sketchbooks of words, bullet points and connecting lines descend. I count down the days until the first emergence of snow drops, colour and bursts of springtime light. However drawing like all practices needs to be just that, practiced.
This year in attempt to break my January cycle I decided to revisit the words from my sketchbooks and make plans to tackle drawing in a new manner.  To reduce the feeling of overwhelm I experience at the beginning of each year I must create boundaries and structure. If I can limit, restrict and restrain my overthinking can I use these same principles in drawing practice to set boundaries and maintain practice.
I began a series of quick response drawings focuses on a single subject matter of menswear AW23. For each drawing I restricted the canvas size to A4 and set a timer for 10 minutes. In 10 minutes you cannot over analyse mistakes, you cannot correct, you must simply react on the fastest way to record/ communicate the most important information.
This series documents my experience of January 2023 addressing my own mood using drawing practice.
